A Little Handmade Rug...

This little rug started off life as several hand knitted panels, some plain knit, some knit/pearl. They were my practice pieces, after my lovely grandmother had shown me how to knit, earlier in the year. I didn’t want to just discard these time spent pieces so decided to turn them into a rug.

I first stitched them together and they looked rather messy and mis-shapen, so stitched the whole thing to two layers of black cotton fabrics, then used strips of various fabrics to cover all the seams.. hand-sewn on with embroidery threads..

and came across the perfect bright pink towel in a charity shop, to use as a backing.. just when I needed it! I tacked this on, and then added the border using pieces of different fabrics.

The rug is all done by hand.. no machine involved in this one.
Its completely recycled.. so is another little greenwhisper!
The fabrics are all from charity shop clothing and the black wool was kindly dontated from a stash that my Mother had left over from her knitting days.

Actually, knitting isn’t something I’d ever have seen myself doing.. and although I am very slow and clumsy at it, I find it so very therapeutic in an almost medative kind of way!

So Thank You Mother, for your patient tutorials and for sharing ancestral knowledge and wisdoms.. love you!
